What Makes Apes Hill So Special

As they say in real estate: "It's location, location, location." It may not be beachfront property but if American founding father, George Washington was right about Barbados back in the 18th. century when he visit that "There are several Risings in the Island, one above the other, so that scarecely any part is deprived of a beautiful Prospect of both Sea and Land."

Update
In a June 15, 2006 CBC interview Michael Pemberton, Executive Director of Paradise Beach LLP, disclosed that 3/4 of a billion dollars will be spent to bring bring Barbados its first Five Star global brand - Four Seasons.
On October 1, 2006 The Sunday Times reported:
* The project is "is now under way."
Comment: Presumably, this means construction has already started.
* The project is being twined with another similar one to be built nearby on Grenada and a plane is to be bought to ferry guests back and forth between the two resorts.
Comment: Since the former Paradise property is less than 35 acres and the Grenada property is more than 500 acres the assumption must be that they plan to build a golf course at the Grenada property and use the plane to take guests of the Barbados hotel to Grenada to play golf. 200 acres are being offered for golf and villa development at Holetown or Warleigh, why not buy one and build a golf course and more villas in Barbados and forget the plane idea which is all pie-in-the-sky, in my humble opinion. The two resorts can hold their own independently of each other.
* Wealthy investors are still being sought to subscribe to the $1.6 billion costs of the two resorts.
* $250 million in financing has already been secured through HBOS.
* Villas are priced between 3 - 12 million dollars - 4 already sold.
* Four Seasons will train 100 Barbadians a year in exchange for being allowed to bring in foreign staff to run the hotel.
* Ritz Carlton and Mandarin Oriental are also shopping sites in Barbados.
Comment: The Ritz may have already found its home at Laborie in nearby St. Lucia.

From Luxury Resort To Golf Resort
As reported by The NationNews September 28, 2006
by SHERRYLYN A. CLARKE
AS SANDY LANE BARBADOS prepares to host the 2006 World Cup Golf Championships in December, management believes this is the catalyst which will help to drive its reputation as a world-class golf facility.
This was revealed by chief executive Michael Pownall during a media briefing at Sandy Lane Country Club on Tuesday to provide an update on the progress being made to stage the Professional Golf Association event in December.
"If you hold any international event where you attract some of the very best players in that particular sport, it gives credibility to the destination, it gives credibility to the course.
"We might have always said in our publicity, in our brochures, how wonderful the golf experience at Sandy Lane is, but that is just us saying it. The testimony really to powerful public relations is when you get some of the world's top players playing at your facility and the exposure that will give."
To this end, they will be making full use of the opportunity to market and promote the hotel in a new way.
"Outside of the plans purely on the course, the logistical set-up and the clubhouse here as well, the other side of things is the opportunity it has given us overseas, in particular, to market and promote Sandy Lane in a slightly new way.
"Sandy Lane, through its history back to 1961 when it first opened, has certainly got a fantastic brand around the world. It has never really been known for the golf side of the business.
Opportunity
"Over the last nine months and the lead-up to the event itself, we are exploring every opportunity we can to get publicity, to get Press coverage, to get the travelling district talking about Sandy Lane from the point of view of it being a golf resort as opposed to purely being seen traditionally as a luxury resort with a great beach and great hotel facilities."
Pownall said this would be important for Sandy Lane and the other local properties which offer golf, as well as attracting more golf visitors to Barbados.
He said the golf market was one that could be tapped to boost the traditionally low months of June and September.
Over the past nine months, there have been numerous changes to bring the Country Club course up to international standard, making it more challenging for the world-class players who will be here later this year for the US$4 million event.

Construction In Full Swing
As reported by the NationNews July 17, 2006:
by ROY R. MORRIS
WHILE THE $800 MILLION Apes Hill Club is just starting to take shape, some of the region's and world's richest are already lining up to grab a piece of the action.
Construction magnate Sir Charles Williams told the DAILY NATION over the weekend that while the first segment of lots would not be ready for "conveyance" until around December, already 80 of the 93 "have owners".
And while Sir Charles did not give a figure, sources close to the project said the vast majority of the lots had been snapped up by Trinidadians for sums ranging from US$275 000 to US$700 000.
West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara is among those securing lots at Apes Hill which, when completed, will represent the single largest investment of its kind ever in Barbados.
The Trinidadians, the source added, had been frequently using the term "parking our money" in reference to their investments in Barbados.
The Apes Hill development, which is being executed in two phases, covers almost 500 acres in St James and St Thomas primarily, while skirting the St Andrew border. It will comprise two golf courses, 160 lots with just over 330 residences, including 150-plus condominiums.
On the north-western corner of the project, on Waterhall Plantation, St James, will be a 120-room, five-star luxury hotel, while on the eastern edge, at Farmers, St Thomas, a massive dam is under construction to trap 80 million gallons of rainwater which will be channelled through a series of pipelines to feed two large three-million-gallon lakes on the golf courses.
Sir Charles disclosed too that because of the "fantastic view", a number of super rich non-nationals were anxious to get their hands on a few choice million-dollar lots from which they could see both North Point in St Lucy and East Point in St Philip.
"This is going to be a fantastic project," he said. "This is going to make a name for Barbados like we have never had. When we were mapping out this project we knew it was going to be one of the top five golf courses in the world.
"Now that our partners, Landmark Limited [of Maryland, United States] have had a chance to intimately survey the land, they are convinced it will beat the one in Santo Domingo, which is considered now to be No. 1."
In fact, Jerry Barton, of Landmark, has noted that the beauty of the area was partially responsible for his decision to invest in the project. His company has built some of America's best known golf courses.
The first course will take golfers over 18 holes that cover steep hillsides with a commanding view of the East Coast, gullies, lakes, even through a cave, while surrounded by towering palm trees and other lush vegetation that have existed naturally for decades.
"I guarantee you this project will bring investment and foreign exchange to Barbados in a way that will be extremely beneficial to the country," said Sir Charles.
